When I bought my Evolt E-500 it came with a genuine Olympus battery, and I bought a knockoff to use as a hot spare. Admittedly they are new and performance will degrade over time, but in identical conditions the genuine Olympus lasts up to 500 pictures and the knockoff barely 300. I bought a second Olympus battery and have more confidence going out into the field.

Ruggedized cameras have always been delivered with some kind of compromise -- an inflated price tag, bulkier body or sub-par image quality. Now, much as the E-M5 did to tighten the gap among mirrorless cameras, Olympus is introducing a full-featured pro-worthy Tough model. The Tough TG-1 is effectively an XZ-1 in a ruggedized shell -- its 12-megapixel 1/2.3-inch BSI CMOS sensor, 25-100mm, f/2.0-4.9 4x zoom lens and 3-inch 610k OLED display are all wrapped in a reinforced body, capable of flawless shooting at depths of 40 feet, in temperatures as low as -10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees Fahrenheit) and after a 6.6-foot fall. With the TG-1, the company is aiming for the pro's gear bag, bringing features like 30 fps full-res rapid-fire shooting (for 50 consecutive shots, or 220 in a 3-megapixel 60 fps mode), the same TruPic VI image processor previously available only on current-gen PEN models and super-fast E-P3-like focusing speeds to an affordable, pocketable compact.

I’ve been keeping an eye on the new Olympus OM-D E-M5 since it was announced. The smaller form factor, weatherized body with 5 axis image stabilization and pocketable M43 sized lenses makes a very exciting package. Their 5 axis image stabilization is really raising the bar. This technology has allowed a photographer with a palsy or tremor to overcome his physical limitations to shoot sharp photos and smooth video. It’s great how technology can improve peoples lives.

I currently suffer from essential tremor, causing my hands shake about 5-10 Hz, which makes my shooting both still picture and video somewhat difficult. When Olympus introduced the new OM-D E-M5 with the new image stabilization system, I thought it might help me shooting easier and I might buy it. Please observe both the LX and the XZ cameras have lenses made for the 1/1.63″ sensor. We know that Panasonic has a new generation of FSI-CMOS sensors, that should suitably fit both these cameras, once upscaled to its size.

Some will argue that there’s a rumor of Sony launching a R2 APS-C camera with fixed lens. We also know Canon recently released the G1X. I don’t know who can love such a camera?

I certainly wouldn’t like the XZ grow into such a behemoth! It wouldn’t be compact at all, so I rather pick a PEN or a GF camera instead!
